Troubleshooting AssetTrack Server Installation

Contents

Verify that AssetTrack is configured to use the correct version of the .NET Framework

If you are getting a Server Unavailable message when you attempt to access AssetTrack with a browser, it may be because AssetTrack is configured to use the wrong version of the .NET Framework. AssetTrack Server is an IIS application that requires .NET 2.0. If you have both .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 installed on the same server, it is important that you check which .NET version is associated to your AssetTrack virtual directory.

To verify/change the .NET version associated with your AssetTrack Server instance:

  1. Open the Internet Information Services from the Administrative Tools menu within the Windows Control Panel.

  2. Locate the virtual directory for AssetTrack. By default, it should be located under your Default Web Site under an /AssetTrack virtual directory.

  3. Right click on the AssetTrack virtual directory and select Properties.

  4. The AssetTrack Virtual Directory properties dialog appears. Click on ASP.NET tab.

  5. The ASP.NET properties panel appears. Ensure that ASP.NET version 2.0.x is selected and press OK.

    Caution Caution
You cannot have two IIS applications in the same process using different versions of ASP.NET. If you have other IIS application in the same website or the same IIS process that use ASP.NET 1.1, you will receive "Server Unavailable" error messages in one or both applications. Ensure that all ASP.NET 1.1 and ASP.NET 2.0 applications are isolated from one another to prevent this error message.

Verify in IIS that AssetTrack is configured to allow Anonymous access

If you're getting permissions error (most likely a 401 Access Denied) in your browser when trying to access AssetTrack Server, follow the steps below to ensure that your security is configured correctly in IIS.

Click on Directory Security tab to bring it to the front.

  5. In the Anonymous Access section of the dialog, click the Edit button.

  6. Ensure that your security settings are the same as the settings shown below

  7. Click OK to exit the dialog.

Manually register ASP.NET with IIS

If you are getting a 404 Page Not Found message when you attempt to access AssetTrack with a browser, it may be because you installed IIS after installing .NET Framework 2.0. In this case, IIS will not know how to handle requests for ASP.NET files and you will get 404 messages.

To remedy this, you need to manually register ASP.NET using the ASP.NET IIS Registration Tool (Aspnet_regiis.exe).

Open a command-line console and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 and execute the command aspnet_regiis -ir.

Ensuring AssetTrack is not in an App Pool with 1.1 Applications

AssetTrack Server is an ASP.NET 2.0 application and cannot run in the same Application Pool as ASP.NET 1.1 applications. UAPM versions prior to 11.3.4 are frequently causes of this issue. If AssetTrack Server is installed in the same Application Pool as an ASP.NET 1.1 application, attempting to hit AssetTrack Server with a Browser will display a "Application Unavailable" message in red letters.

We recommend creating a dedicated IIS Application Pool for AssetTrack Server. The steps below will walk you through this process.

  1. Access IIS. To access IIS in Windows Server 2003, go to Start -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Click on the "+" box next to the local computer’s name.

  3. To verify that "2.0 App Pool" exists click on the "+" box next to the Application Pools folder.

  4. If the "2.0 App Pool" does not exist than right click on the Application Pools folder and highlight "New" and select "Application Pool".

  5. In the Application Pool Id enter: "2.0 App Pool" and hit "Ok".

  6. Click on the "+" box next to the "Web Sites" folder.

  7. Click on the "+" box next to the "Default Web Site" Globe icon.

  8. Right click on "AssetTrack" and choose "Properties".

  9. In the "Application pool" field, choose 2.0 App Pool. This app pool should have been created during installation during the AssetTrack installation.

  10. Click the OK button and you’re done.
  11. If AMI_UnicenterIntergration virtual directory exists under the "Default Web Site" globe icon, repeat Steps 4-7.
  12. To verify all was successful, in your browser navigate to AssetTrack Server to make sure that there are no errors.

"Failed to read IISWebsTable. (-2147023728)" message when installing AssetTrack Server

You will encounter this message if your IIS web site is configured in a non-default way as illustrated below.

  1. Access IIS. To access IIS in Windows Server 2003, go to Start -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Click on the "+" box next to the local computer’s name.
  3. Navigate through the Web Sites folder until you reach Default Web Site.

  4. Right-click on Default Web Site and select Properties
  5. In the Web Sites tab, check the IP Address setting. It must indicate "All Unassigned". If it is set to an IP address, it will cause setup to fail with the "Failed to read IISWebs" message.

  6. Once you've updated this setting, click OK to save your change.
  7. If your setup process failed because of the "Failed to read IISWebs" message, re-attempt the setup.

Repairing an existing AssetTrack installation fails

AssetTrack Installer program fails to repair AssetTrack when a different version setup program is used.

If you attempt to use the "Repair" feature of AssetTrackSetup.exe to repair an existing installation of AssetTrack but are using a different verson of the Setup program, the repair operation will fail. To update AssetTrack Server to a newer version, use the Remove feature to remove the previous installation and then use the installer program to do a new install.
